生活中可能會時不時聽到 in the end 和 at the end 這兩個表達法，但你是否有過跟這位學員一樣的疑惑呢？
老師您好，請問這句：He’s always busy at the end of the year.（他年底時總是很忙。），at the end 可以改成 in the end 嗎？兩者差在哪裡呢？

at the end 的用法
首先，end 有「最後部分、末尾」的意思，而 at the end 一般會在後面搭配 of something 表示「在某事物的最後或末尾」，像 at the end of the month（月底）、 at the end of the street（街道盡頭）、 at the end of the document（文件最末）。來看幾個例子：
The phone bill will be sent at the end of each month.（電話費帳單會在每月月底寄發。）
You’ll find the hotel at the end of the street.（你會在街道盡頭找到那棟旅館。）
Make sure that you put your signature at the end of the document.（務必要在文件最末簽上你的名字。）
不過在談論故事、書本、影片...的最後部分時，我們也可以獨立使用 at the end。例如：
At the end, her mom finally recognized her. They hugged each other and burst into tears.（最後，她媽媽終於認出了她。兩人抱在一起哭成一團。）
in the end 的用法
至於 in the end 則有 finally（最後）的意思，後面不加上 of something。這個表達法常用來表達在經過長時間或一連串事件之後如何如何，或在經過一番考慮後如何如何。例如：
We were thinking about going to Japan this summer, but in the end, we gave up the plan.（我們本來今年夏天要去日本，但最後我們取消了這個計畫。）
Tim and Kate got into a heated debate. In the end, Tim stormed out of the house.（Tim 和 Kate 發生激烈爭吵。最後 Tim 奪門而出。）
We got lost on the way, but we made it to our destination in the end.（我們中途迷了路，但最後我們還是順利抵達目的地。）
在這三個句子中，in the end 後面接的訊息都是在說明經過一番思考或事件之後最後出現的結果，後面也都不會加上 of something 喔。
所以回到剛才學員的提問，He’s always busy at the end of the year. 可不可以改成 in the end of the year，答案是：不會這樣改！in the end 是「最後」的意思，後面不會加上 of something，而要表示「在某事物的最後」，我們會用 at the end of something 這個表達法，所以「年底」的英文會寫成 at the end of the year。

相同的概念也適用於 at the beginning 和 in the beginning 這對組合。at the beginning 後面一般會搭配 of 來帶出「在...的開始」，像是 at the beginning of the year（年初）、at the beginning of the sentence（句首），例如：
We can put "also" at the beginning of the sentence but not at the end of the sentence.（我們可以把「also」放句首，但不會放句尾。）
至於 in the beginning 則是 at first（一開始）的意思，後面不加上 of。這個表達法會用來帶出一個情況並跟後面的情況比較。例如：
In the beginning, no one believed him. But in the end, people realized he was telling the truth.（一開始沒人相信他。但最後人們意識到他之前說的是真話。）
