「美國方面聲明：美國認識到，在台灣海峽兩邊的所有中國人都認為只有一個中國，台灣是中國的一部分。美國政府對這一立場不提出異議。」
The US side declared: The United States acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The United States Government does not challenge that position.
1979年元月一日生效的「美中建交公報」上，美國對於所謂的「一中」問題，進一步表述為：
「美利堅合眾國承認中華人民共和國是中國的唯一合法政府……美利堅合眾國政府認知中國的立場，即只有一個中國，台灣是中國的一部分。」
The United States of America recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legal Government of China.……The Government of the United States of America acknowledges the Chinese position that there is but one China and Taiwan is part of China.
在在說明美國的「一中政策」（One China Policy）並不等同中國的「一中原則」（One China Priciple）而是各有其對「一中」的表述。尤其在川普當選總統後，更公開揚言，除非和中國能在其他事情，包括貿易問題上談成協議，否則「不需受到一個中國政策約束（be bound by a one China policy）」。引發了美國政壇上一片挑戰中共「一中原則」的浪潮。
例如：前美國在台協會處長司徒文就赤裸裸地說，「美中三公報是冷戰的遺跡」。1972年的上海公報的問題，它並無事實上的基礎。因為它主張「兩岸的中國人都認為只有一個中國，而台灣是中國的一部份」。但這也許對於毛澤東與蔣介石是正確的；卻沒有人問過台灣人民或中國人民的意見。
