美國新任總統川普美東時間20日中午12點（台灣時間21日凌晨1點）在美國國會山宣誓就任美國第45位總統。他在就職演說中兩次提到「美國優先」，稱這將是他今後做每一個決定的出發點，並誓言打破華府陳腐的體制，為人民找回工作與財富。演講最後他也訴求團結：「團結一致，我們將讓美國再度強大」。
在美國前總統卡特（Jimmy Carter）、小布希（George Bush）、歐巴馬（Barack Obama）、多位國會議員、新政府內閣團隊及數十萬觀禮民眾的注視下，川普（Donald Trump）面對最高法院首席大法官羅伯茲（John Glover Roberts, Jr）舉起右手，宣讀法定誓詞，正式成為新總統。
宣誓儀式結束後，川普發表就職演說。長達15分鐘演說中，他兩次提到「美國優先」，並稱這將是他今後做每一個決定的出發點。他說，權力屬於全體美國人民，那些曾經被遺忘的美國人民將不會再被遺忘和忽視。
在內政上，川普承諾創造更多的就業機會，修建新的交通網路，建立更完善的社會福利體系。他稱未來執政將遵循兩個原則：「購買美國貨，雇用美國人。」
在外交上，他將領導美國與其他國家建立良好的外交關係，同時鏟除恐怖主義。他稱，如果美國人能團結起來，將不可阻擋。並呼籲所有美國人摒棄空談，展開行動。「空談時刻已經結束，行動就要展開，別讓別人告訴你，這件事無法達成。」

We, the citizens of America, are now joined in a great national effort to rebuild our country and to restore its promise for all of our people.Together, we will determine the course of America and the world for years to come.We will face challenges. We will confront hardships. But we will get the job done.

Washington flourished – but the people did not share in its wealth.Politicians prospered – but the jobs left, and the factories closed.The establishment protected itself, but not the citizens of our country.

But for too many of our citizens, a different reality exists: Mothers and children trapped in poverty in our inner cities; rusted-out factories scattered like tombstones across the landscape of our nation; an education system, flush with cash, but which leaves our young and beautiful students deprived of knowledge; and the crime and gangs and drugs that have stolen too many lives and robbed our country of so much unrealized potential.
This American carnage stops right here and stops right now.

We stand at the birth of a new millennium, ready to unlock the mysteries of space, to free the Earth from the miseries of disease, and to harness the energies, industries and technologies of tomorrow.
