美國人只會為自己的利益而打仗，就像中國人或任何國家的人都只會為自己的利益而打仗，所謂「人不為己，天誅地滅」，毋乃是顛撲不破的真理格言。
職是，當台灣地理位置是美國絕不可棄守的戰略利益時，中共一旦出兵犯台時，美國會不會為這利益而必須捍衛到底？
美國反對台灣海峽任何一邊片面改變現狀
2016年12月16日，即將卸任的美國總統歐巴馬在記者會上，小心翼翼地就一中政策提出了以下評論：
「長期以來，基本上在中國、美國、以及某種程度上與台灣人之間，一直有個協議，就是不要改變現狀。台灣以和中國大陸不同的方式運作著。中國將台灣視作中國的一部份，但承認在與台灣接觸時，將視台灣作為一個有著自己行事方式的實體。台灣人已同意，只要他們能繼續以某種程度自治運作著，就不會進一步宣布獨立。而這樣的現狀雖然無法滿足任何一方，也已經維持了和平，並讓台灣成為一個相當成功的經濟體，其人民也享有高度自治。」
“There has been a longstanding agreement essentially between China and the United States, and to some degree the Taiwanese, which is to not change the status quo. Taiwan operates differently than mainland China does. China views Taiwan as part of China, but recognizes that it has to approach Taiwan as an entity that has its own ways of doing things. The Taiwanese have agreed that as long as they’re able to continue to function with some degree of autonomy, that they won’t charge forward and declare independence. And that status quo, although not completely satisfactory to any of the parties involved, has kept the peace and allowed the Taiwanese to be a pretty successful economy and — of people who have a high degree of self-determination.”
